Dunoon Town Study
This was a short project given in the final semester of my Stage 3 year. It aimed at examining the layout of the small seaside town of Dunoon, and how an architectural installation could rejuvenate it’s struggling economy. I used the precedent of the Fogo Island Arts community, based in Newfoundland Canada, which has shown great success at establishing itself as an artists community and retreat, which attracts many tourists to area throughout the year. From my own research of Dunoon, I found that they have the artisanal talents and potential to create a small artist community hub for the peninsulas of Argyll and Bute.
The Burgh Halls, that sits adjacent to the proposed site, is currently undergoing renovation to become an exhibition and café space; for my project I proposed opening up the site for use as an artists community, where local artist and craftspeople could share their talent and create an entire new cultural economy within the small town. I further identified locations throughout the town that could be activated throughout the year for arts and crafts markets as well as art festivals.
